Chile's largest salt desert, the Salar d'Atacama is home to pink flamingo lagoons, volcanoes and one of the world's major sources of lithium.

The Salar d'Atacama is Chile's largest salt desert. Located in the Antofagasta region, about one hundred kilometers southeast of San Pedro de Atacama, it spans approximately 3,000 km² at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Framed by the Licancabur and Láscar volcanoes, it is home to several lagoons populated by pink flamingos and constitutes one of the world's largest active sources of lithium.

Why Visit the Salar d'Atacama

Unlike the neighboring Salar d'Uyuni, the Salar d'Atacama does not present itself as a uniform white expanse. Its salt crust, brownish and rough, alternates with turquoise lagoons where three species of pink flamingos found in Chile come to feed: the parina chica, parina grande, and flamenco chileno. The area is part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, which protects several ecosystems of the Andean altiplano.

The salar also holds major economic importance: its brines contain one of the planet's highest concentrations of lithium, a metal used in battery manufacturing. Extraction zones are visible from certain points along the route, but most of the site remains dedicated to tourism and conservation.

What to See on the Salar d'Atacama

Lagune de Chaxa

Located in the heart of the salar, Lagune de Chaxa is the most accessible sector of the Los Flamencos reserve. It is one of Chile's best sites for observing the three species of pink flamingos present in the country. A marked trail allows you to walk along the shores without disturbing the birds. The light at the end of the day, when the flamingos stand out against the salt and volcanoes, is particularly prized by photographers.

Laguna Cejar

Laguna Cejar is part of a cluster of lagoons north of the salar. Its high salt concentration allows for floating, comparable to that of the Dead Sea. Swimming is regulated to preserve the ecosystem: you generally need to rinse before and after your dip. Plan for a half-day to explore the sector, which often includes the Ojos del Salar, two circular pools of water fed by an underground river.

The Village of Toconao

On the road to the salar from San Pedro, the village of Toconao is built from light volcanic stones extracted locally. Its San Lucas church, painted white, dates from the 18th century, and its bell tower stands apart from the main building, according to a layout typical of the Andes. The village is home to several handicraft workshops working with alpaca wool and liparite stone.

Other High-altitude Lagoons

South of the salar, the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, located at altitudes above 4,000 meters, offer another facet of the reserve: deep blue waters, wild guanacos, and near-total silence. They are often visited as a complement to the salar itself.

Practical Information

The Salar d'Atacama is visited almost exclusively through organized excursions from San Pedro de Atacama, either as a half-day or full-day trip. Entry to the sectors managed by the Los Flamencos National Reserve (Lagune de Chaxa, high-altitude lagoons, Laguna Cejar) is paid, with separate fees for each site. Generally plan for 2 to 3 hours at Lagune de Chaxa, more if you combine multiple sites.

The altitude (2,300 to 4,200 m depending on the sectors), intense solar radiation, and dryness of the air require certain precautions: sun protection, covering clothing, plenty of water, and gradual acclimatization before high-altitude excursions.

When to Go

The dry season, from April to November, remains the most favorable time to visit the salar. Days are sunny with temperatures between 18 and 25 °C, but nights often drop below 0 °C between June and August. The summer season (December to March) experiences the "Bolivian winter," a phenomenon of high-altitude storms that can make certain tracks impassable. The light at dawn and dusk, when flamingos are most active, is ideal for wildlife observation.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is the international El Loa airport in Calama, about 100 km from San Pedro de Atacama, with daily connections to Santiago, Chile. Shuttles and buses connect Calama–San Pedro in approximately 1.5 hours. From Santiago, overnight buses reach San Pedro in 22 to 24 hours depending on the company. Once in San Pedro, the salar is not directly served by public transport: the vast majority of visitors use a local agency or rent a vehicle suitable for the tracks.

More to Explore in the Region

San Pedro de Atacama serves as a base for exploring several major sites in northern Chile and the bordering altiplano. Complementary excursions include the Tatio geysers, one of the world's highest geothermal fields, and the Valley of the Moon, whose rock formations evoke a lunar landscape. On the Bolivian side, the crossing south to Lipez and the Salar d'Uyuni remains one of the classic extensions of the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

No. The salt crust of the Salar d'Atacama is rough, irregular, and rather brownish, unlike the smooth, white surface of Uyuni. Its visual appeal lies mainly in its lagoons and the volcanoes surrounding it.

Swimming is permitted only in certain specific lagoons, such as Laguna Cejar, where the salt concentration allows for floating. Other sectors, particularly Lagune de Chaxa, are strictly reserved for observation.

A half-day is sufficient for Lagune de Chaxa. To combine multiple sectors (Cejar, Ojos del Salar, high-altitude lagoons, Toconao), plan for one to two full days from San Pedro de Atacama.

It is not mandatory for sites accessible by car, but strongly recommended. San Pedro agencies offer guided excursions with transportation, which simplifies logistics and access to regulated sectors of the reserve.
