A stratovolcano standing at 5,438 m in southwestern Potosí, Nuevo Mundo offers a challenging ascent across the Bolivian Altiplano.

Volcan Nuevo Mundo rises to 5,438 m in southwestern Bolivia, at the heart of Potosí department. This stratovolcano long remained shrouded in mystery, only truly located in the late 20th century after nearly a century of research. Its ascent remains today the preserve of experienced mountaineers acclimatized to high altitude.

Why climb Nuevo Mundo?

Nuevo Mundo attracts mountaineers for three main reasons. First, its altitude of 5,438 m makes it a serious high-altitude Andean objective, without reaching the technical difficulty of Bolivia's major peaks such as Sajama or Illimani. Second, its singular history: this volcano was the subject of research over nearly a century before being formally identified. Finally, its isolation, in a seldom-visited region of southwestern Potosí, guarantees a mountain experience far from the beaten path.

The region belongs to the volcanic province of the Bolivian Altiplano, which contains some forty volcanoes. Nuevo Mundo fits into this volcanic landscape, near the Potosí department and its mining traditions.

History and rediscovery of the volcano

French mountaineer Georges Courty was the first to explore the region before 1903. He reported the existence of a remarkable summit there, whose description was later taken up by Jill Neate in her reference work Mountaineers in the Andes, New World, published in 1987.

German geologist and mountaineer Friedrich Ahlfeld, settled in Bolivia from 1924 onwards, took up the trail. After World War II, he systematically explored the mountains of Potosí department and identified one of the two peaks of Cerro Lípez as a possible candidate for the mysterious mountain described by Courty. He mentioned this hypothesis in a letter addressed to historian Evelio Echevarría in 1962, then published a drawing of the volcano in his book Physical Geography of Bolivia in 1969.

It was not until the late 1990s that the site was relocated on the ground by Toto Aramayo, accompanied by cook Dakin, after extensive searches. This recent rediscovery partly explains why Nuevo Mundo remains less visited compared to other Bolivian peaks.

What you observe on the ground

Nuevo Mundo is a classic stratovolcano, consisting of a lava dome, pumice cones and ancient lava flows. These elements testify to its past activity and structure the slopes of the edifice. The volcano is today considered dormant.

The climb itself offers expansive panoramas over the southern Altiplano and neighboring volcanic ranges. The terrain is rugged, mixing volcanic scree, ash slopes and rocky passages. Progress requires good terrain reading and solid physical condition due to sustained altitude.

When to go

The best period for the ascent corresponds to the dry season, from May to September. Rainfall is then rare, days more stable and nights cold but clear. Outside this window, snow and bad weather greatly complicate the approach and progress.

June and July are the coldest but also the driest months. May and September offer an interesting compromise between temperatures and weather stability. Avoid the rainy season, from December to March.

Practical information

The ascent of Nuevo Mundo generally takes place over two days, with a halt at base camp before the final push to the summit. Several local agencies based in Potosí or La Paz offer this trek with guide and logistics.

Required level

The ascent is considered difficult due to altitude (5,438 m) and rugged terrain. Mountaineers must be in good physical condition, have prior high-altitude mountaineering experience and sufficient acclimatization to limit risks associated with acute mountain sickness.

Tips

  • Do the ascent with an experienced local guide, as the site is isolated and poorly marked.
  • Plan equipment suited to high-altitude conditions (warm clothing, intense sun protection, cold-weather sleeping bag).
  • Spend several days acclimatizing around Potosí or the Altiplano before the ascent.
  • Check the weather locally before departure.

How to get there

Nuevo Mundo is located north of the village of Potoco, near the estancias Khuchu Huayhuasi and Huayhuasi, in southwestern Potosí department. Access requires several stages:

  1. Reach Sucre by plane (Juana Azurduy de Padilla airport) or La Paz, then continue to Potosí by bus (allow approximately half a day depending on connections).
  2. From Potosí, reach the city of Llallagua by bus or collective taxi.
  3. From Llallagua, reach the base of the volcano by vehicle, ideally organized through an agency or local guide.

On-site logistics (guide, mules, equipment) is mainly found in Potosí or through specialized high-altitude Bolivian operators.

Nearby

A stay around Nuevo Mundo can be extended with other stages in southern Bolivia:

  • Potosí, former capital of colonial silver and the logistical starting point for the ascent.
  • Hacienda Cayara, a historic residence located near Potosí, ideal for a stop before or after the trek.
  • Casa de la Libertad in Sucre, a cultural stop on the route from the airport.
  • Church of Curahuara de Carangas, on the Altiplano, to continue exploring the Andean region.
