Pinaya Village
Pinaya Village
Nestled at 4,000m in the Royal Cordillera, Pinaya is the Aymara village that opens the way to Mount Illimani, Bolivia's second-highest peak.
When we think of Pinaya, the Mount Illimani instantly comes to mind. This village in the La Paz Department, perched at approximately 4,000 meters above sea level, is the starting point for climbing this second-highest summit in Bolivie, reaching 6,438 meters. Pinaya will dazzle you with the region's beauty before your ascent of this Andean giant. With panoramic views over snow-capped peaks and magnificent mountain landscapes, you'll be nothing short of mesmerized.
Pinaya, the gateway to Mount Illimani
The village of Pinaya serves as a logistical base for expeditions to Illimani. Climbers meet their local guides and muleteers before beginning their journey toward the Puente Roto base camp.
The first stage involves reaching Alto Nido de Cóndores camp, situated at 5,500 meters. Porters transport heavy equipment while climbers progress at their own pace along a marked trail.
Essential services for the ascent are found in the village: technical equipment rental, potable water supply, and accommodation options with local families for acclimatization. Local agencies also offer mules to carry provisions to the base camp.
It's worth noting that climbing Illimani is a demanding adventure, reserved for experienced mountaineers. It is strongly recommended to engage certified high-altitude mountain guides to ensure safety and success during the ascent.
Other activities in the area

Climate in this region of Bolivie
The Pinaya region experiences two distinct seasons that shape visiting opportunities. The dry season, from May to October, offers optimal conditions with clear skies and pleasant daytime temperatures around 15–20°C.
The months of July and August present particularly favorable weather for hiking and climbing Illimani, despite very cold nights when temperatures can drop below 0°C.
The period from November to March brings more abundant rainfall. Frequent showers make certain trails slippery and limit visibility of the peaks. Daytime temperatures remain stable but humidity intensifies the sensation of cold at altitude.
To reach Pinaya, you must depart from La Paz. From the Peruvian capital, a four-wheel-drive journey of approximately three and a half hours is necessary to reach the village. It is advisable to plan this journey with a local agency or experienced guide, as roads can be challenging and require thorough knowledge of the terrain.
