The spirit of travel

You dream of mountain expeditions, beautiful wild spaces… We set out on an expedition for you in 2013 in the Cordillère Apolobamba (see video below), far north of Bolivie. A remote, magnificent region and above all wild and secret. We opened a trail on its north-west slope.
You are passionate mountaineers, with experience, this expedition will delight you with an unprecedented trek offering breathtaking landscapes and idyllic campsites. You will have the opportunity to climb two beautiful uncharted mountains, the Cololo with its technically challenging summit wall, the Huanacuni and its splendid, airy ridges.
The Chaupi Orco, the only 6000-meter peak in this mountain range is an enormous glacial massif nestled in the heart of an idyllic valley.

Art, hiking and markets in La Paz

We begin this day by discovering the K'Illi K'Illi viewpoint which offers a magnificent view of La Paz and the Illimani massif.

We then descend into the southern area to meet a sculptor and watercolorist from La Paz, Ramon Tito. He works primarily with stone that he finds in the surroundings of La Paz: clays from the Valley of Souls, basalt, marble, sandstone, alabaster, granite… According to the shape of the stone he finds, he creates works that carry Bolivian identity within them.

We then set off on a hike in the Pedregal Canyon (3600m alt.). The climb is gentle, amid the impressive fairy chimneys, up to a pass that opens onto El Valle Escondido (the hidden valley). We continue to the village situated at the foot of the Devil's Molar.

Hiking time: 2 to 3 hours
Elevation gain: +330m/-495m

To finish this beautiful day, afternoon dedicated to discovering on foot the traditional markets and the historic center of the city of La Paz.

Back at the village we meet a weaver from the village who teaches us the technique of traditional weaving. It sometimes takes a month to weave an aguayo, a traditional Andean fabric.

To complete this immersion, tasting of the Apthapi, the traditional lunch of the Andean countryside. The different families of the village bring local specialties: pancakes, fritters, quinoa shortbreads, corn, potatoes or small fried fish from the lake which are shared in all friendliness.

In the afternoon, possibility to navigate on the lake in a traditional boat. Night in Santiago de Okola.

Camp Huanacuni - Camp Palomani Grande

We start this day with a long climb to a pass located at 5120m altitude. The slopes are regular and the walk easy, in the midst of herds of llamas and groups of vicuñas.

We descend towards lakes located near the Pelechuco pass (4850m). Magnificent view of Cerro Presidente, Azucarani and Palomani Grande, an alignment of peaks, exceptionally oriented East/West. Picnic by the lake before starting our second climb, due North, towards a pass located at 5230 meters altitude. As we approach the pass, we enjoy an exceptional panorama of Palomani Grande and especially Azucarani. After a steeper slope we reach our pass, on a mineral plateau.

Then, we catch sight of the eastern end of the gigantic Lake Suches, which marks the border with Peru and houses a major gold mine. We reach a very beautiful valley. The information below concerns travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Canada traveling to Bolivia for a tourist stay. Since entry rules may change, we recommend that you verify this information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter Bolivia, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after your entry date into the country and must have at least one blank page for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).

Tourist stay without a visa

Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada benefit from a visa exemption for tourist stays in Bolivia.

This exemption allows a stay of up to 90 days per year in Bolivian territory. This duration is calculated on a calendar year basis and generally cannot be exceeded without specific administrative procedures.

Authorities may also request:

  • an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay.

Tourist card

Upon arrival in Bolivia, travelers may be asked to complete a tourist card or entry form issued by Bolivian immigration services, particularly when entering by land.

This document allows authorities to collect certain information necessary for entry into the territory:

  • passport information

  • purpose and duration of stay

  • address of first accommodation in Bolivia

It is advisable to keep this document throughout your stay, as it may be requested when leaving the territory.

Health and vaccinations

No vaccine is officially required to enter Bolivia from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada. However, vaccination against yellow fever is strongly recommended for travelers going to tropical lowland regions (Amazon, Beni and Santa Cruz departments).

It is also recommended to inquire about the risks associated with malaria in certain rural areas and to take appropriate precautions. The high altitude of certain Bolivian destinations (La Paz, Potosí, Uyuni) can cause altitude sickness (soroche): a medical consultation before departure is recommended.

Travel with children

Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the territory may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence. Bolivian authorities may also request documents proving the family relationship or parental authorization.

Other nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire with the embassy or consulate of Bolivia in their country of residence.

To take part in our trips, it is strongly recommended that you have assistance-repatriation and foreign medical expenses insurance.
