Yellow Fever Vaccination in Bolivia

For all stays in Bolivia involving travel to the Amazon region (Béni, Rurrenabaque, Santa Cruz, or the Bolivian Pantanal), it is strongly advised, and indeed recommended, to be vaccinated against Yellow Fever. Although yellow fever vaccination is not yet mandatory, the number of disease outbreaks is expanding beyond the Amazon regions, justifying the strong vaccination recommendation.

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if you plan to continue your vacation in Brazil. Even for a transit, proof of vaccination will be required!

For yellow fever vaccination, plan for an injection at least 10 days before your departure.

Malaria in Bolivia

The Bolivian Amazon is not spared from malaria risks. In addition to basic protective measures (insect repellent, long clothing, mosquito nets) that will also protect against other insects, we recommend preventive medication treatment. Consult your doctor for the appropriate treatment.

This preventive treatment is not necessary for stays outside the Amazon region. The Andean highlands or La Paz are not affected by malaria.

Other Health Risks

Without succumbing to unnecessary worry, we advise you to remain cautious throughout your stay. Traveler's diarrhea is not uncommon, and the main cause remains foodborne. Stay vigilant and never drink tap water; instead, choose cooked fruits and vegetables or those washed with bottled treated water, and thoroughly cooked meats.

For high-altitude stays, including Andean expeditions, prepare yourself for the possible effects of altitude sickness. While we remain vigilant about the adaptation period, altitude sickness can be unpredictable.

Travel to Bolivia for Pregnant Women

Zika virus is not inherently considered a serious disease, but it can present severe neurological complications in newborns of mothers who have contracted the virus. We advise pregnant women to consult their doctor before any departure.

To avoid unpleasant surprises upon arrival in Bolivia, we recommend you always check with the Embassy of Bolivia in France or with the "Travel Advice" section of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs website before your departure. Bolivian authorities may modify prescriptions at any time, particularly in case of virus or infection outbreaks in the country or neighboring countries.
