Perched on the Altiplano plateau high in the Andes, La Paz is a city where tradition and modernity converge. Soaring above it by cable car to admire the beauty of its markets and snow-capped mountains from above is a truly mesmerizing experience. Connecting different parts of the city, the cable car system is both a practical and comfortable mode of transportation while offering the finest views of the city and its surroundings.
Why Use La Paz's Cable Car?
Construction of the Mi Teleferico began in 2012 under President Evo Morales Ayma. At 2,717 feet, La Paz's cable car is the highest and largest urban transport system in the world. Choosing it as your means of transport saves you from hours spent navigating between neighborhoods, stuck in traffic jams. Moreover, the cabins offer optimal comfort.
What Are the Mi Teleferico Lines?
Altogether, 10 lines connect all of La Paz to its most important points and the neighboring city of El Alto.
Red Cable Car
The red line of La Paz's cable car is by far the best route to take. It passes over La Paz's enormous general cemetery, crosses through the vibrant Chualluma neighborhood, and climbs up to El Alto before traversing it.
Yellow Cable Car
The yellow line allows you to discover the Sopocachi neighborhood, home to La Paz's finest restaurants. Along the way, beautiful views of the mountains unfold before you.
Blue Cable Car
The blue line crosses through the city of El Alto. It captivates you with its most typical buildings, such as Villa Adela Cholets, one of the most photographed constructions.
Green Cable Car
The green line explores the southern part of the city in Alto Obrajes. At the top, you can see the Esperanza Bridge, which displays a hopeful green color.
Orange Cable Car
The orange line shares stations with the red and white lines, but allows you to visit the Calama market and its colorful stalls.
Other Lines
Peaceful journeys await you on the other lines. While the white line takes you to admire Villaroel Square for a comprehensive visit, the light blue line enchants you with the Witches' Market.
If you take the purple line, you'll be treated to magnificent panoramas of the city, as it connects La Paz and El Alto perpendicularly. You can also opt for the café line which brings you closer to the Busch monument, or the silver line bordering the city of El Alto.
Where to Board La Paz's Cable Car?
The main stations where you can board the Mi Teleferico in La Paz are the Rojo station downtown, the Amarillo station in the south, and the Celeste station in the north of the city. If you're in El Alto, the Jacha Qhathu station in the south and K'ara K'ara to the east handle transportation.
