Bolivia's highest peaks rise amid stunning mountain landscapes of South America. Volcanoes, glaciated mountains, summits accessible to trekkers of all levels or experienced alpinists: here are 8 exceptional ascents to undertake in Bolivie!

Nevado Sajama Volcano: 6,542 m
  Bolivia's Highest Peaks

Rising to 6,542 meters in elevation, the Nevado Sajama volcano is Bolivia's highest summit. Located in the Oruro Department at the heart of Sajama National Park, it's recognizable by the eternal snows that blanket its peak—and shelters one of the world's highest forests!

Despite its steep slopes, climbing Nevado Sajama isn't particularly difficult, though it does demand good physical fitness. The main challenge of this trek is the climate. For safety reasons, the volcano can only be climbed during the tourist season (April to September) and is best done with a professional guide.

Nevado Illimani: 6,439 m

Bolivia's second-highest mountain, Illimani rises southeast of La Paz. Considered the city's sentinel or "protector" thanks to its 6,439-meter elevation, this mountain massif features four main peaks—including the coveted Condor's Head summit at 5,648 m.

The ascent to the highest peak presents no particular technical difficulties, yet it's genuinely rewarding! To admire its glaciers and panoramic views, you'll need to tackle sometimes steep trails (up to 50 degrees of elevation gain). Exploration is recommended between June and August—and you should be accustomed to trekking.

Ancohuma Mountain: 6,427 m
  Bolivia's Highest Peaks

Northwest of the Cordillera Real, you'll find Ancohuma, a glaciated mountain renowned for its stunning landscapes. While its ascent involves some technical elements, what it truly demands is solid endurance…

During your trek, you can admire the beautiful Laguna Glaciar (at over 5,000 m elevation) and views of Illampu. Little visited, Ancohuma also offers fine vistas of Lake Titicaca!

Illampu Mountain: 6,368 m

About a hundred kilometers from La Paz, Illampu dominates the Sorata valley. Its distinguishing feature? Even though it's only Bolivia's fourth-highest peak, it poses a real challenge even for seasoned hikers!

A genuine athletic endeavor, this peak offers breathtaking views of the Cordillera Real and a conquerer's sense of accomplishment amid wild nature. This trek (around 6 days of walking) features numerous high-altitude sections…

Parinacota Volcano: 6,330 m
  Bolivia's Highest Peaks

Located on the Bolivia-Chile border, Parinacota Volcano belongs to the Andean mountain range. Considered a sacred mountain, it's a pilgrimage site for indigenous peoples.

During your hike, you can observe numerous bird species, as well as bofedales (high-altitude wetland pastures)—some quite unusual, as they're reddish in color due to volcanic rock presence!

Here's the good news? Its ascent is relatively straightforward! Whatever your hiking level, you'll have the chance to witness lava flows, lakes, and numerous wildlife (llamas, alpacas, etc.).

Chearoco and Chachacomani Mountains: 6,127 - 6,074 m

Rather obscure and rarely visited, Chearoco and Chachacomani are genuine natural wonders offering magnificent views of glaciated massifs and mountain lakes.

Located in the Bolivian Andes (in Larecaja Province), these summits feature sometimes steep terrain yet remain quite accessible, particularly Chachacomani.

Huayna Potosí Mountain: 6,088 m
  Bolivia's Highest Peaks

Climbing Huayna Potosí is an incredible experience, but only for seasoned mountaineers. It demands excellent physical and mental conditioning!

Equipped with ice axes, you'll navigate a challenging environment where you'll contend with fatigue and altitude effects… Once you reach its sublime snow-covered summit, you'll be rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view!

Licancabur Volcano: 5,960 m

Rising to nearly 6,000 meters, Licancabur Volcano is renowned for its distinctive landscapes and black lava flows. Among its most beautiful natural attractions? The Laguna Verde! Famous for its emerald waters, this salt lake is also an exceptional observation spot to admire pink flamingos…

Licancabur's ascent is best suited for experienced trekkers and requires proper equipment. The easiest route to the summit is near the village of Aguas Calientes (requiring 2 days of walking).

Soroche: How to prevent mountain sickness felt at high altitude?

To avoid soroche and its effects (including breathlessness or accelerated heart rate, linked to reduced oxygen) it's essential to acclimatize your body before climbing! To do this? 48 hours before your expedition, stay in a city or village located at over 2,000 meters elevation… and rest!
